History of the Faculty:

 

1805 - Established branch of medical science (later – Faculty of Medicine) Imperial Kharkov University.

1920 - Medical Faculty of Kharkov University merged with the Kharkov Medical Institute  and Kharkiv Women’s Medical Society, was formed as a result of  the Kharkiv Medical Academy.

1921 - Kharkiv Medical Academy was renamed to Kharkiv Medical Institute, a part of which was formed 2 faculties: medical and odontology.

1930 - Medical Department was reorganized in the prophylactic treatment of the Kharkov Medical Institute.

1937 - Medical-prophylactic faculty renamed to the medical faculty of the Kharkov Medical Institute.

1992 - Medical Department was reorganized in the Medical Faculty of the Kharkov Medical Institute (from 1994 – Kharkov State Medical University).

1994 - Medical Faculty of Kharkov State Medical University is divided into first and second medical faculty.

 

Introduction to Faculty

Among the faculty are: Academician of NAS of Ukraine, winner of three State Prizes of the USSR, USSR, Ukraine, Honored Scientist of Ukraine, professor. Gryshchenko V.I.,  a member of the CDF. AMS of Ukraine, Honored Scientist of Ukraine, professor. Pilipenko M.I.,  4 Honored Scientist of Ukraine-Honored Doctor of Ukraine professor. Lesovoy V.M., 8 full members of public and international academies of sciences.

In 12 departments of the faculty are 126 teachers, including: 27 professors, 25 doctors, 89 candidates.

Training of physicians is conducted under the guidance of experienced teachers, doctors and candidates of medical sciences. Teaching is carried out according to modern standards of higher educational establishments. The main goal of the faculty is to prepare qualified physicians for the world, who perfectly knows their business with high fundamentals and training.

In the under graduate program, during six years of study the students learn different subjects from fundamental subjects disciplines to special medical subjects.

Graduates of the faculty receive the degree of MBBS/MD from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the degree is approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) is known nationally for its many innovative teaching, clinical training and research programs. Because the class size is relatively small, our faculty members get to know each student. It is one thing to say the University has terrific people and programs and another to prove it.

Foreigners learn in group of seven eight students along with local students. The second year students attend their clinical studies where they can gain experience in nursing the patients. Clinical subjects are taught beginning from the third year of study. Students can study any topic of interest and to raise their of knowledge in the departments. All six years of the program are important and all must be passed successfully before students are permitted to graduate.

The faculty provides comfortable atmosphere, highly qualified teaching staff, and big library to students for learning..

All graduates are employed after graduation in the field that is not only a confirmation of the high ranking of KNMU, but also high rank of the qualified professors and purposeful work of his students.

The Ministry of education and Ministry of Public health, Ukraine approved the curriculum of the medical faculty. Almost all the countries of the world accepts the degree of Kharkiv National Medical University.

The state final examinations on all the disciplines according to the syllabus are held within one system through 2 stages:

 

-          testing practical proficiency of final-year students (when exams on clinical disciplines are taken, testing takes place at the

patient’s bed)

-          testing scientific/theoretical proficiency.

The successful students who will complete study of five years, then on graduation work for another year under probation in order to gain general registration. There is a wide range of specializations available in the public and private sectors, involving research, academic medicine, public health, clinical medicine and other areas. Specialties include Cardiology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Psychological Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Public Health, General Practice and many others. Most doctors complete postgraduate training in their chosen specialty.

FACULTY OF PEDIATRICS
Duration: 6 years

The course of study comprises six academic years. The syllabuses of fundamental sciences are very close to those of the “General Medicine”, however much attention is paid to the peculiarities of the vitality of infantile organism. Of the multitude of clinical subjects students study pediatrics and surgery of a child’s age.Those, who successfully complete their education, acquire the diploma of pediatrician and can be engaged in treating patients at children hospitals, continue their study and be involved in research work.

A doctor-peadiatrician must be a high-educated person, possess wide knowledge in the field of biological, medical and special sciences and be not only a doctor but also an educator. A student receives general biological and medical education at first courses; the paediatrical education starts from the third course to the sixth course. Students of the paediatrical faculty master knowledge at many chairs during 6 years of study , where they study anatomy, physiology, pathology and hygiene of childish age.

The employees of the chairs study successfully the questions of pathology of childish age, rearing, organization of help for children by purulent and inflammatory diseases, treatment of inborn defects of hip and hip-joint development, children’s infectious diseases and others.

The intensive education of students-paediatrists at theoretical and clinical chairs allows to train skilled doctors-paediatrists. Besides studies by educational program, many students conduct a scientific work in groups; work in laboratories, that’s why one can assert boldly that readiness of students to practical activity is quite high in establishments of health protection.

At 6th course students are given a right of choice (depending on the requirement of practical health protection) of his further specialization and namely a doctor-paediatrist of a wide profile or children’s doctor-surgeon.

After passing state exams all the students with diplomas of doctors-paediatrists go to children’s medical and prophylactic establishments for passing the internship during one year. The internship gives an opportunity to specialize in the earlier chosen paediatrical profession.

Graduates of the paediatrical faculty the doctors-paeditrists work in all parts of our country. Some of them became scientists, others – practical doctors.

FACULTY OF DENTISTRY(STOMATOLOGY)
At the dentistry faculty the curriculum is worked out for five academic years. The students master the basic subjects of medical and biological profile, as well as various clinical disciplines, which are so necessary for a dentist. On condition of successful completion of study the graduates are given the Diploma of a doctor – dentist. The curriculum foresees the further postgraduate education. The degree awarded is BDS.For the junior courses students study theoretical disciplines and beginning from the fourth course, they start studying clinical disciplines. At junior courses students study theoretical disciplines and, beginning from the fourth course, they start studying clinical disciplines. Among them there are therapeutic and orthopaedic stomatology. The chairs of anatomy, histology, normal physiology, biochemistry, general chemistry, having wonderful traditions in organization of educational process and high skilled teachers, could do profiles for the teaching of their disciplines, taking into account the faculty’s specificity.For mastering the propaedeutic course by students the departments were well equipped additional premises, acquired a necessary quantity of visual aids and special apparatus. All employees of the chairs and students took an active part in making the educational manuals. A metal-ceramic laboratory and a laboratory for high frequency melting and casting of dentures are specially organised.At special dental departments the students study principal actual problems of dentistry: caries, parodonthosis, diseases of the mucous membrane in the mouth cavity. The principle task of the dental faculty is perfection of higher dentistry education, raising the quality of doctors dental training.At the faculty they worked out and applied the complex of methodical ways for optimization of educational process, which is aimed at activisation of cognitive activity of students, development of habits for educational and researching work, training the creative method of approach for professional activity. The stomatological faculty helps the students to obtain good knowledge in the dental field. FACULTY OF PHARMACY
The pharmaceutical faculty was inaugurated by the Ministry for Education and science for Ukraine. The faculty began training specialists’ pharmacists of general direction “pharmaceutics”. At the pharmacological faculty the curriculum if for five academic years.The student acquire the fundamentals of medical and biological knowledge, learn in detail various subjects in the specialty and some clinical ones. On successful completion of study the graduates get the diploma of pharmacist. The faculty trains the students for work at the instutions of pharmacy and also for research work.

 
A powerful educational methodical base is being created for training highly qualified specialists. There are such departments are as the pharmacognosy, Biology and Genetics department and chemopharmaceutic disciplines department. Medical botany, Inorganic chemistry, Analytical, physical and organic chemistry, methods for analysis are taught at these departments. FACULTY OF POST-GRADUATION
The faculty of postgraduate education offers the study in 55 medical specialties at internship, mastership and clinical internship. At the department of Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU), along with the traditional ways of teaching, there is also a module study, and a through out program of students’ practice. Constantly developing base of computerized equipment gives the possibility to use modern PC know-how and world informative networks in the process of study.Postgraduates at Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) are taught in English, Ukrainian and Russian languages according to the programs and curricula approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. We take into consideration and peculiarities of public health services of the state trainees come from. The duration of the post graduate courses is 2 years.

The main objective of the postgraduate training is to allow the students of medical institutions to continue their education and general practitioners to improve their skills for further certification and faculty is directed at the training and improvement of qualification and skills of specialists to master not only up-to date medical information but new modern technologies of today and tomorrow.

The Medical faculty of Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU), together with its teaching hospitals and other health organizations in Ukraine and abroad, will provide the necessary physical and human resources to create a scholarly environment appropriate for the training of medical graduates so that they acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become accomplished physicians and surgeons with the highest moral and ethical standards.

The individual form of training is based on qualification characteristics, professional and position requirements, principles of realized perspective and doctor’s pretensions. Detailed theoretical training is combined with learning practical skills, operative technique, and typical and complex operations.

To maintain its international role, the Medical Faculty of Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) intends by means of contractual arrangements with foreign countries, universities, and hospitals to train residents from other countries in its postgraduate training programs who will return to their home country upon completion of their training.

Doctors can come to join Post Graduation whole the year and there is no time restrictions for Post Graduation.

FACULTY OF NURSING
The faculty of nursing practice trains medical nurses – bachelors with higher medical education. The applicants with medical education (those who have finished medical instutions of the first grade accreditation) are admitted to the University. The course of study lasts two academic years for day time department and three academic years for part time department.
At first students study fundamental medical and biological disciplines. Then they study clinical subjects and nursing in different situations. Practical training together with theoretical one are given both at different departments of University and clinics. The graduates get the diploma of bachelor. Their qualification allows to occupy administrative posts and work as medical nurses of different profile.

  Thus favorable conditions are provided to efficiently train junior specialists and apply the system of continuous staged training by comprehensive curricula and programs for medical nurses with the basic higher medical education – bachelor-nurses.

  To reform the education is impossible without expanding international cooperation with other Universities abroad, and these activities are carried on along the following directions:

  • Foreign scientists are invited for teaching and research. Citizens of other countries are taught on basic of interstate and bilateral agreements
  • International activities: training specialists and science workers, realizing international projects, services etc.
  • Steps are being taken for the educational sector of Ukraine to join the international treaties on preliminary training of persons who are going to apply to higher institutions
  • Assistance is provided in establishing and supporting direct contacts of educational institutions of Ukraine with other states
  • International science conferences, symposiums, exhibitions, presentations are organized and participated by the University

  The University carries on these activities in compliance with the acting legislation and the Rules of the University. Wide international cooperation helps raising the organizational standard and improving the teaching/studying process.
